TOWN OF STAFFORD
ACCOUNTANT
Department: Finance
Location: Town Hall 1 Main Street, Stafford Springs, CT
Bargaining Unit: Non-union
Salary Range: $70,000 to $75,000

Statement of Duties
The Accountant is primarily responsible for performing
governmental accounting duties and fiscal reporting requirements under the
supervision of the Director of Finance. This position oversees the
Payroll/Accounts Payable/Purchasing Coordinator.

Works under the immediate direction of the Director of
Finance.
Typical
Duties
Assists the Director of Finance in complex analysis of
financial and budgetary matters. Responsible for cash receipts including
reconciling Town investment and cash accounts, assigning account numbers to all
cash receipts, completing journal entries to record investment income, grants,
debt service payments and department revenues. Balances and reconciles bank
accounts and maintains general ledger. Prepares required quarterly and fiscal
year end reports. Prepares financial statements and data requests for workers’
compensation and other routine audits. Assists Director of Finance in budget
preparation and annual year-end audit. Provides back-up coverage for payroll
and accounts payable functions.
Required
Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited college or
university with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
or closely related field and at least three (3) years experience in municipal government
accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of Edmunds
municipal accounting system preferred. Knowledge of practices and
procedures used in governmental accounting, including GAAP, GASB fund
accounting and encumbrance accounting. The Accountant is required to exercise
considerable independent judgment in performing the duties of this position. Valid
motor vehicle operator’s license. Must be eligible for bonding in accordance
with Connecticut State Statutes.
Physical Requirements
The Accountant performs work in a professional
office environment with occasional related field work. Routine use of standard
office equipment is required and the noise level is typically quiet. The
employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. In the course of
duties, the employee regularly stands, sits, walks, speaks and hears and
occasionally reaches and bends.
The applicant will be required to successfully
complete pre-employment drug testing and applicable background, financial and
criminal investigation.
Work Schedule and Benefits
This is a full-time thirty-five (35) hour work
week Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8am to 4:45pm and Thursday 8am to 6:45pm. This
position may occasionally require hours beyond the regular schedule as job
duties demand. This position is eligible
for full benefits which currently includes health/dental/vision/life insurance,
457b defined contribution retirement plan with match, and generous paid time
off.
