JOB TITLE:  Senior Accountant


CLASSIFICATION:  Salary Non-Exempt                   BARGAINING UNION:  N/A


SUPERVISOR:  Controller


SCOPE:  The Senior Accountant will be responsible for maintaining various manual and EDP accounting functions and providing administrative support in conjunction with the total operation of the Department of Finance.





§  Submit monthly Trial Balance Reports of the following account groups:  General Fund, Special Revenue, Trust and Agency, Capital Projects and Enterprise Funds.

§  Organize the reconciliation of checking accounts for all fund groups. 

§  Possess working knowledge of the payroll function to act as a backup as required.

§  Print control reports for cash receipts and expenditures at month end and participate in reconciling differences.

§  Maintain spreadsheet applications as needed for interim and long range forecasting reports.

§  Provide and maintain EDP filing system for general correspondence, special reports, and

budgeting documents including annual budget documents.

§  Provide other related office functions in order to maintain the integrity and efficiency of the Finance Department.

§  Distribute mail and answer phone inquiries as a back up to the Accounting Clerk.

§  Provide support to and act as back up for the Controller in their absence.

§  Perform other related duties as required.


Education and Training


§  High School diploma or equivalent required.

§  Bachelor’s degree in a finance or business related field required, advanced degree preferred.

§  Five (5) years’ experience in Accounting or Financial practices in a municipal environment preferred.



Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required: 


§  Excellent organizational skills.

§  Ability to multitask and complete multiple projects on-time and within budget.

§  Proficiency with MS Office Suite, including database management.

§  Possess significant expertise in standard accounting practices.

§  Ability to interact professionally with multiple levels of the general public, Town Officials and Town Employees

§  Munis Experience

§  Ability to supervise support staff in the absence of the Controller.

§  Maintain trial balance

§  Plan and arrange cash management

§  Enter all general journal entries

§  Working knowledge of funding relationship between Federal, State and local government.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
